For those wondering how to land a job in production, I thought I’d share my answers to some questions that may be front of mind. I hope the insight will be useful for when you’re first getting started in the creative industry.

1 – Which key attributes do you look for when recruiting new members to the team?

When recruiting new team members, I think attributes like enthusiasm, adaptability and creativity are super important. Nobody comes as a complete package, no matter what their experience, so a willingness to still learn and push boundaries is always attractive. Finding people with different backgrounds and perspectives is key as it helps enrich team dynamics and produce better work.

2 – Is a degree essential for success in the creative industry? Are there any other ways of breaking through?

While a degree can be beneficial in the creative industry, it’s not the only path to success. Passion, dedication, and a willingness to learn and get stuck in, can take you far. Creating your own work along with networking and seizing opportunities for hands-on experience are fantastic ways to break into the industry.

3 – Do you have any tips for networking and building relationships?

Networking revolves around fostering genuine connections. Being your authentic self, having a genuine interest in others, and being proactive in your outreach are key. Attend industry gatherings if possible or engage meaningfully on social platforms – and always follow up with contacts. Remember that relationships thrive on trust and mutual respect.

4 – How important is feedback when starting out in production?

You will experience feedback in every area of production – from clients to colleagues. Feedback holds immense value, particularly when embarking on a career in production. I think something you can’t learn early enough is to embrace constructive criticism as a catalyst for growth – rather than a personal attack. It serves to refine skills, broaden perspectives, and bolster confidence. Every nugget of feedback is an invaluable stepping stone toward improvement.

5 – How can you ensure that you are constantly learning and growing in the creative sector?

Constant learning and growth are essential in the highly dynamic creative sector. There’s always a new creative approach or tech innovation that you need to know about. Stay curious! Explore new techniques, tools, and trends. Seek out mentors, take courses, attend workshops, and never stop experimenting. Remember, every experience is a chance to learn something new and make new connections.
