Live streaming major events on digital platforms such as TikTok, LinkedIn, X, Instagram, YouTube or Facebook presents a unique opportunity to connect with your chosen audience in real-time, and on a one-to-one level.
As a producer of all things live here at Sassy+, crafting an engaging stream goes beyond just broadcasting beautiful, on-trend content. Moments of star power are great short-term live boosters and feed content, but your goal should always be to foster an interactive experience that keeps viewers invested throughout the event campaign and beyond. How you achieve this is dependent on the subject and context of your stream and having a good understanding of how the audiences that frequent those platforms engage on them. These are crucial considerations.
Plan and prepare for how viewers will engage
First and foremost, don’t ignore your viewers. It seems obvious, but all too often, scripting, planning, or resourcing viewer engagement is not prioritized. In many cases it is forgotten, covered in rehearsal on the day of the event, this is generally too late.
Game streamers and creators have their trusted mod-squad to be their constant link and look after their chat and Discord communities whilst live or offline. Brands invest heavily in responding to reviews and comments on apps because addressing people directly and making them feel recognised creates a sense of connection and encourages more participation. When you acknowledge and engage individuals in your live stream, you’re not just addressing a faceless crowd, you’re building a one-to-one relationship, rewarding loyalty and boosting participation.
In some cases you might be streaming across multiple platforms, and available resources may mean prioritising one chat channel, or deploying automated methods to aggregate comments, questions and sentiments. There are many deployable tools we can use in this scenario.
Chat interactions throughout the live stream
It’s essential to integrate chat interactions naturally into your content. Forcing engagement into the live stream can disrupt the flow and feel disjointed. Instead, find ways to weave viewer engagement into the narrative to achieve a seamless flow.
For example, if a viewer asks a great question but it’s not time-sensitive, acknowledge it and then address the question at a moment that is relevant to and enhances the content rather than halting proceedings. That viewer will inevitably stay online to hear what you have to say. You might also visualise sentiments through votes, counters and emotes which is easy for a host to engage with.
Scheduled and signposted moments for viewer comments & questions
If the format of your live stream doesn’t allow for continuous engagement with questions, make a feature of it at specific intervals throughout, reminding people this will happen in between. Don’t leave acknowledgment of engagement until the end, when early joiners and community members who are commenting and furiously tapping questions may have left.
Schedule and signpost regular segments where you highlight and respond to viewer comments. This approach not only ensures that engagement is acknowledged, but also keeps the interaction structured and anticipated. And do encourage the use of the native features of your platform – there are so many ways to engage now!
Call-out constructive, topical engagement
Rewarding positive, on-topic interactions is also crucial. Recognise and appreciate viewers who contribute constructively to the chat. This not only encourages similar behaviour, but also cultivates a community atmosphere, and has the potential to activate the viewer’s own network through sharing.
Questions or comments from one viewer are likely to be of interest to others, so airing a point that adds to the subject matter will add value to the experience for everyone.
Algorithms, visibility and recommendations
Achieving positive viewer engagement is key to leveraging recommendation algorithms on most platforms. Positive interactions can boost your stream’s visibility, whilst allowing negative engagement may adversely affect your viewership because the platforms can and will punish it.
Moderators should remove or give a timeout to any confrontational participant without drawing attention to it. Or reply to an off-topic comment with a general reminder of the stream’s subjects or goals. If things are really getting out of hand, the host is going to be the ultimate voice of authority that brings things back into focus, but that is best avoided where possible.
To sum up – Don’t miss out because or you didn’t set time aside to ideate engagement tactics at the early stages of development and planning, or that additional person to manage engagement wasn’t budgeted for. By investing in and promoting a welcoming and interactive environment, you enhance both the viewer experience and your stream’s chances of global success.
Engaging with your audience in a deliberate and meaningful way, whilst maximising the individual nuance of each digital platform, will transform your live streams into dynamic, successful and interactive events that resonate long after the broadcast ends.
